September 30, 2017

September was another action-packed month for chess in Southern Illinois!  The club ladder was very active with three players each taking a position at the top of the ladder throughout the month!  We also had several new members in attendance for the first time throughout September.  Welcome, new attendees we really appreciate you coming out and joining the club!

The Southern Illinois Chess Club also helped co-host an unrated tournament at Anna Gardens in Anna, Illinois.  After a fierce night of battling Michael Barkdoll managed a lucky 5.0/5.0 for first place, William Little finished strongly with 4.0/5.0 for second place, and Keyan Rahimi came in third with an impressive 3.5/5.0!  Keyan also dominated the club ladder at one point throughout September.  These were some very impressive results and the Southern Illinois Chess Club looks forward to watching his future developments!  A special thank you to Corbin Dallas for providing the venue, refreshments and fun-filled afternoon at Anna Gardens.

The Southern Illinois Chess Club is planning to host an official USCF quick rated G/29 tournament on SIU Campus on January 13th, 2018.   Additionally, we’re tentatively planning a slow USCF tournament around April 21st on SIU campus as well with some prizes.  Stay tuned for more details in the near future.

August 31st, 2017

August was an exciting month for Southern Illinois Chess!  We helped co-host the Blindfold King GM Timur Gareyev at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois on August 21st shortly after the Total Eclipse!  GM Timur played 10 boards simultaneously blindfolded while riding an exercise bike.  Grandmaster Timur Gareyev finished with a score of 8 wins 2 draws and 0 losses.  Congratulations to both Keyan Rahimi and Corbin Dallas for getting draws against GM Timur!

Southern Illinois Chess Club would like to say a special thank you to Potentia Analytics and the Department of Computer Science, without their sponsership, this event wouldn’t have been possible!

Looking forward into September, Corbin Dallas will be hosting 10 players unrated casual tournament at his house.  Please RSVP, if you’re interested in attending!

The Southern Illinois Chess Club will also now start hosting a club ladder.  Players willing to play G/25 at Barnes and Nobles and report their win/loss/draw records to Michael Barkdoll will have their results recorded on the website for the official club ladder!
